Frequently Asked Questions

  • In the state of Connecticut, a referral from a physician is not required to attend pelvic health physical therapy. If your therapist feels additional medication examination or treatment is indicated, we may encourage you to see a physician or can refer you to a physician.

  • We are “out of network” with all commerical insurances & do not contract at all with Medicare and Medicaid. This allows us to spend more one-on-one time in our sessions and provide the highest quality of care to our patients. We collect payment at the time of service in the form of cash, credit card, check, flexible savings accounts or health savings accounts. We absolutely work with each patient to develop a plan that works for their schedule, lifestyle, and budget.

Upon request, we can provide a superbill or itemized bill for commerical insurance companies (not medicare or medicaid) with all the necessary information to submit it to your insurance. This is the sole responsibility of the patient to do so.

You may be able to file this with your insurance company “out of network” reimbursement” if your plan has out of network benefits. If you are interested in knowing your level of “out of network” reimbursement, please call your insurance provider and ask about their coverage for “out of network physical therapy”. This is solely the responsibility of the patient. We do have a handout with a list of questions to facilitate this conversation with your insurance company upon request. Please email us at hello@centralitywellness.com.

Medicare Beneficiaries: we are not Participating Medicare Providers, we can only accept Medicare beneficiaries as wellness clients; which means medicare will not be billed for services and superbills will not be provided.

If you do want to use your Medicare benefits for physical therapy, we cannot provide you with treatment at our clinic but we can help you find a good Medicare provider in your area.

  • YES! We absolutely do sell and provide gift cards for purchase if you are interested in giving the gift of pelvic health. This is a great gift for the holidays, a baby shower, a postpartum gift, etc. To find the gift cards, please follow THIS LINK for the digital send option.

  • We treat individuals of all ages & genders (yes, men too!) . This means we accept pediatric patients (those under the age of 18), as we specialize in pediatric pelvic floor issues too. We require a parent or guardian present for anyone under the age of 18 years old.

  • If you are seeing us for pelvic floor dysfunction, it may be helpful to make a list of the symptoms you are experiencing (urinary leakage, pelvic pain, prolapse, constipation, etc). We will discuss all your symptoms with you in detail during the appointment.

If you are coming to our clinic for a pregnancy wellness & birth prep visit, it can often be helpful to write a list of specific questions or concerns you have and/or anything you are interested in learning.

Regardless of your appointment, please complete your new patient paperwork with as much detail as you feel comfortable sharing.

  • Appointment frequency is individualized for each client. We do recommend starting with a solid foundation of Evaluation and 3-4 follow up visits at the weekly mark to gather all the data and ensure we have the ball rolling in your plan of care. Then we can determine the best frequency for you.

  • You’ll always see the same provider as we do not pass patients between therapists. Each therapist has their own schedule, so the therapist that you see at your initial appointment is the individual that you will see each session.

The only exception to this rule is if the patient requests it or if a patient could benefit from the treatment of a different provider. For Example, Dr. Jen has specialty training in Integrative Dry Needling Techniques. If someone is interested or appropriate for IDN techniques, it may be discussed to see Dr. Jen or have Dr. Jen co-treat for a session.

  • The first session is a lot of information gathering. Its an hour long session, one-on-one in a private treatment room and you will discuss your history, concerns, symptoms that have brought you to Centrality Wellness, your goals & more.

After the therapist takes a thorough history, they will do an initial assessment, which typically includes an assessment of posture, spine mobility and mechanics, joint range of motion, external pelvic girdle and hip muscles and an internal pelvic floor muscle assessment to assess the muscle strength, tone and function of your pelvic floor muscles.

An internal vaginal and/or rectal muscle assessment will only be performed with your consent and only if you are comfortable. If you would prefer to wait until a future session or not at all, we support this choice. We will discuss this with you multiple times during your session.

  • No. Nothing is ever required. Internal pelvic floor muscle assessments do give us valuable information about the health of your pelvic floor, but it is just one tool/ technique for us to gather information, definitely not the only method.

If you do not wish to partake in an internal pelvic floor muscle assessment, we support that decision completely.

We do provide internal pelvic floor assessment to our pregnancy wellness patients (with the exception of the first trimester), so if you feel this something you are interested in but would like clearance from your OB/midwife first, feel free to contact them prior to your appointment.

  • Absolutely.

  • We can absolutely still see you while you are on your period. In fact, seeing you while you are menstruating, this can give us information regarding your pelvic health that may be pertinent to your pelvic floor health. Sessions may also focus solely on external treatment techniques and strengthening if appropriate. Treatment while on your period is a decision left solely up to the patient.
